The Achilles' Helmet case is based on the Iliad account of the siege of Troy in which it is said that the ashes of Prince Patroclus and Prince Achilles of Phthia were mingled in the same funerary urn before being placed in Achilles' tomb.

The Athenian Connection case involves aspects of the history of religious icons and the way they were painted. Veneration of icons had been suppressed by imperial edict inside the Byzantine Empire by Leo III (717 -741) but was finally restored by the Second Council of Nicaea in 787. Iconoclastic tendancies lead to the destruction of many icons.
